After a good 5 hours of freaking and changing it between a wall and pc USB charger to no avail, I decided to connect it to my car's iPod dock/charging adapter. To my absolute surprise this worked like a charm and after roughly 2 minutes I managed to reset it and get the little red battery screen. Left it in the car for about 10 minutes before disconnecting the adapter and reconnecting the iPod to my pc USB charger. It charged perfectly and switched on/off without any hassles.
