Briefly: Digital music player sales to skyrocket (nooos!!1), Labels vs iTMS Japan, Yahoo! Music Unlimited partners with Stanford, iPod mini killed too soon?, “Instant Play” Apple patent
- Digital music player sales seen up sharply by 2009 (“IDC predicted that annual sales of compressed audio players will reach 945.5 million units worth $145.4 billion in 2009, up from 224.9 units worth $46.7 billion in 2004”; 1Bn units, worth $145Bn; nice)
- Big labels play waiting game with iTunes (“Some of Japan’s biggest record companies aren’t ready to play ball with iTunes Japan, and that’s got some artists crying foul.”; said labels include: the Japanese branches of SonyBMG and Warner Music, and Victor Entertainment—remember that a month ago, Sony was supposed to be in talks with Apple about iTMS Japan; artists are so upset they’re not riding the ever-popular iTunes bandwagon, that they’re striking indepedent deals with Apple if possible—i.e. when distribution isn’t a part of their contract with the labels) [via]
- Yahoo! Music Unlimited partners with Stanford University (and students have free access to the program for the first year, because of an anonymous donor—cross-platform issues notwithstanding, this good stuff)
- Did Jobs Kill the iPod mini Too Soon? (“His modus operandi entails swinging for the fences, doing whatever it takes to create home-run products—the kind that can perpetuate the growth jag that is now nearly a half-decade old.”—also read: Why Did Apple Kill The iPod Mini In Its Prime?)
- Apple and Pixar file “Instant Play” patents (old news, posting it for archival reasons; “Basically, it refers to a device’s (future iPod?) ability to begin playing an audio file instantly upon its being selected, even before the file has been fully or even significantly loaded from storage into memory.”)
