Briefly: SanDisk Sansa e140 review, Korean FTC on Samsung’s Apple flash deal, Philips Tune In concept, NAND flash prices rise, UpTo11 playlist sharing, Format lock-in
- Review: SanDisk Sansa e140 (English) (not to be confused with the recently introduced m200 series; apart from the rough rotary wheel, it gets the job done nicely—we’ve covered another (positive) review before; you can get the 1GB version for $105 and the 512MB one for $67) [via]
- Samsung, Apple May be Probed on Unfair Trading: FTC Chairman (because Samsung sells its NAND flash memory chips to Apple at below-market prices, roughly 50% off—guess that ‘letter’ didn’t help much) [via]
- Concept: Philips Tune In (“The idea is that this portable MP3 player has a radar on it that seeks out other Tune In devices in your vicinity. When it finds another player, it can pick up the broadcasts from that device and tap into the tunes stored on it. So, if you’re sat on a Tube and someone else has a Tune In near you, you can listen to their songs.”; it’s not really working yet, and I’ve got a feeling it’ll take a while before it hits the streets; also, if it doesn’t let me turn off the broadcasting signal, then ‘boo’ for privacy hate) [via]
- Expected new Apple product causes NAND flash prices to rise (buyers are placing orders aggressively, fearing that a shortage might re-occur; this happens because, according to the article, there’s fear of Apple releasing new flash-based iPods on October 12th—I don’t get it, all sources—bar none—claim we’ll see HDD-based iPods, where are they basing this?) [via]
- UpTo11: Music playlist sharing, tracking and recommendations (social software for your playlists; with a nice interface, compared to the competitors whose UI suck; of course, it’s the content that counts—will they attract a big userbase? anyway, I may actually give it a go) [via]
- My Songs, My Format (most people don’t know that the tracks they bought from the iTMS won’t play on MP3 players other than the iPod—this is the Times’ take on the issue) [via]
